Back-the-Mayor Campaign

Determination seemed no less on the other side. A local newspaper the next day reported that the Jackson Avenue Lions Club had sent Mayor Loeb a telegram stating that the club was "standing 100 per cent behind you." The message had the approval of the Lions Club International, according to the article.

It was also reported that a letter and telegram campaign in support of the mayor was underway. Apparently it was organized very well indeed. As of that date, the mayor had received 1,809 telegrams backing his stand. Of 22 telegrams opposing it, only seven were local. There were 307 letters favorable to the mayor. Of 56 unfavorable letters, only 14 were local. Fifteen letters of support had been received by special delivery before the regular mail delivery on that day. More than 1,000 signatures had been obtained on petitions of support for Mayor Loeb.

Mrs. Bee Clark, who heads the Western Union credit department in Memphis, said, "Everybody in town is sending telegrams. I've never seen anything like it. You would think it was the end of the world."
