Broadly speaking, the applicant should have the ability to work independently and help non-union RNs form a union in their workplace with little to no coaching. Position is responsible for successfully conducting both external and internal organizing campaigns.  Performs activities associated with external organizing campaigns, including targeting, assessing workers' support of the Union, organizing committees, home visits, pre-petition campaigns, election campaigns, card-check campaigns and first contract campaigns.  Internal organizing campaign activity may include assessing members' support of the Union, making home visits, and various member mobilization activities. DUTIES:
  • Understands and is proficient in all elements of organizing non-union workers. 
  • Researches potential organizing targets' collects target data and information. 
  • Conducts one-on-one organizing, recruits supporters and leaders, guides their activities on behalf of the Union, and identifies attitudes of individual workers. 
  • Recruits volunteer organizers from within the Union's membership. 
  • Visits job sites to communicate with workers. 
  • Writes leaflets and other materials for the organizing campaign. 
  • Develops action plan and strategies for external and/or internal organizing projects 
  • Informs Organizing Director of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings. 
  • Performs related work as assigned. 
  • Excellent computer skills 
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Knowledge of union organizing practice and principles. 
  • Knowledge of labor laws, especially with respect to union organizing. 
  • Ability to train and coordinate volunteer organizers and organizing committee members. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and interact effectively with potential union members, Affiliate leadership and existing Union members. 
  • Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work. 
  • Extensive travel may be required; current California Drivers License. 
  • Five years of experience in organizing is highly preferred. Current active RN is a bonus.
