DUTIES:   Develops and implements a variety of education and scholarship programs for AFSCME activists, leaders, and staff. This position has primary responsibility for the AFSCME curriculum library and for our joint work with the National Labor College. Education programs can include brief presentations at affiliate offices, day-long or weekend seminars, web-based training, workshops at conferences and week-long programs. Education needs include leadership development, organizing training, steward and activist training, political action training, and other topics as assigned. Scholarships include programs for AFSCME members, their children, or student labor activists. Works with national union or affiliate staff and leaders who request training to identify training objectives and plan training programs and to develop education plans for particular campaigns (e.g. organizing campaigns, strike preparation, contract campaigns).  In some cases, trains affiliate activists and staff to conduct training programs. Creates, modifies and revises program materials to address specific needs. Includes appropriate examples, role-play scenarios, exercises, case studies, and discussion questions. Field tests new material and seeks feedback from participants to refine curricula and materials. Provides follow-up training in the field for participants in training programs when appropriate. Coordinates AFSCME scholarship programs as assigned. Provides assistance with affiliate strategic planning and other facilitation, as assigned. Prepares weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on all activities that can be incorporated into departmental summaries. Collects data, writes and edits departmental and program reports as requested. Makes logistical arrangements associated with educational programs when necessary. Reconciles billing statements before payment is approved. Assists with nationally targeted organizing campaigns and political action campaigns as needed. Performs other related work as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in education,
 training or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities and skills: Thorough knowledge of adult teaching and learning techniques. Knowledge of labor unions and the associated training of activists, leaders, and staff. Ability to develop training curricula and conduct training presentations in a variety of settings. Ability to select or develop appropriate teaching materials. Ability to use all forms of multi-media visual aids. Ability to use computer and associated software, including web-based applications. Ability to develop work plans, work with minimal direction and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action. Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness. Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate effectively. Experience in union organizing. Travel is required and extensive.  Evening and weekend work required.
