Accounting Clerk I - Budget, Financial Services

DUTIES: Processes, reviews and inputs a variety of financial and accounting transactions according to Union and department policies and procedures.  Uses one or more accounting software systems, spreadsheets and word processing software to perform required tasks.  Communicates with staff by telephone, e-mail and memos.  Maintains records, logs and files of transactions and activities.  Performs other general clerical tasks as assigned.  Specific duties include processes information by comparing and/or transferring alpha and numeric information to other data sources.  Inputs data into and generates reports from automated accounting systems.  Performs examinations and simple reconciliations of documents to ensure mathematical accuracy of data or accuracy of transactions to source documents.  Adheres to AFSCME financial policies and procedures. Prepares required forms to complete processing transactions.  Maintains and prepares summary reports and statistical information of accounting activities using manual and automated means.  Copies source documents as required to forward on to other phases of processing.  Maintains files of source documents and other statistical and informational reports of processing activities. May provide assistance to department by answering phones, opening and distributing mail, preparing mailings to departments, or performing other general clerical tasks.  May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: High school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of one year accounting or bookkeeping courses at the college level, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: ability to effectively use MSEXCEL; knowledge of AFSCME’s accounting processes and related policies and ability to interpret and apply them to work activities; Ability to input data into automated accounting and database systems and other office equipment required; Must be proficient in the use of personal computer, word processing, and a calculator/adding machine. Overtime may be required.  Advanced bookkeeping experience or accounting courses desirable.
