Staff Representative, AFSCME Council 73 - Hamilton, NJ
DUTIES: Reports to the Executive Director of AFSCME Council 73. Serves as lead negotiator or in a key advisory capacity during negotiations for affiliated local unions. Prepares and may present economic exhibits, contract language, information summaries, arguments and counter-arguments, and testimony during negotiations and impasse procedures. May prepare and present expert testimony before municipal councils and county freeholder boards, and may deal with the press on issues. Responsible for representing employees in grievance, disciplinary, unfair labor practice, and arbitration hearings before such organizations as the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law, the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission, and the National Labor Relations Board. Responsible for conducting both external and internal organizing campaigns and political activities. Other duties as required. REQUIREMENTS: Any combination of four years of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: thorough knowledge of labor unions and organizing; thorough and advanced knowledge of collective bargaining processes and strategies, grievance and discipline handling, civil service, labor law and workplace issues, both in the public and private sectors; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to conduct sound research and make logical conclusions; ability to lead projects and work effectively with diverse constituencies; ability to lead bargaining teams; ability to problem solve and generate creative solutions; demonstrated competencies in the use of personal computers, e-mail communication, internet searches and word processing; and a valid driver’s license.
