DUTIES: Coordinates the Organizing and Field Services Department's development of experience union organizers. Works with the Organizer Recruiters to perform a variety of recruitment and job placement activities with a goal of attracting and retaining qualified organizing talent. Participates with field and headquarters staff in developing training and evaluating the skills development for organizing staff; includes tracking probation dates and notifying the appropriate staff of deadlines for decision making. Works closely with Organizers as well as Organizing Directors and Leads to communicate benchmarks for success in the organizer training program. Develops and implements training programs for organizers. Conducts ongoing performance evaluations of organizers based on field observations and reports from field staff, and recommends strategies for improvement. May conduct recruitment outreach for organizer positions with colleges/universities, student organizations, community organizations and other unions. Interviews and makes recommendations for organizer candidates. In coordination with Public Affairs, develops materials for outreach and promotion of AFSCME campaigns and the organizing program. Participates in the development of the overall strategy to raise the visibility of AFSCME’s organizing program to enhance our recruitment opportunities. Prepares and maintains proper records of all recruitment–related activities. Coordinates with the Department of Human Resources as appropriate.
REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a four-year college or university with at least five to seven years of union organizing experience or relevant community/political organizing, as well as the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Lead union organizing experience and/or relevant community/political organizing. Experience mentoring organizers and members in learning the basics of union organizing. Knowledge of recruiting techniques helpful. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to use personal computers, including setting up and maintaining databases and web-based applications. Ability to work with little direction and execute projects effectively within a prescribed timeframe. Ability to communicate in a foreign language desirable. Ability to build and maintain interpersonal relationships. Ability to work well within a team. Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in various settings. Ability to work in a fast paced, high-pressure environment. Ability to travel extensively and work extended hours.
