This position is responsible for successfully conducting and running organizing campaign.  Performs activities associated with campaigns, organizers, committees, making home visits, performs voter assessment, and plans campaigns implementing AFSCME Organizing Model.  Implementation of the AFSCME Organizing Model includes targeting, pre-petition campaigns, election campaigns and first amendment campaigns.

• Understands and is proficient in all elements of the AFSCME Organizing model.

• Explores organizing targets to gather data and information, build a list of workers, assesses interest, and scouts out the physical plant without divulging the union’s presence.

• Conducts one-on-one organizing, recruit supporters and leaders, guide their activities on behalf of the union, and identifies attitudes of individual workers.

• Recruits volunteer organizers from within the AFSCME membership.

• Develops broad, representative organizing committees of worker-leaders, and trains and deploys them to move the campaign.

• Visits job sites to communicate with workers.

• Organize and conduct group meetings.

• Visits workers in their homes.

• Writes leaflets and distributes materials for organizing campaigns.

• Obtains and creates employee lists.  Maintains list, which may include input on, and operation of, computerized database systems.

• Informs lead organizer of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity including worker meetings.

• Performs related work as required.

• Prepare regular activity reports as required.

Direction and Decision Making

This position reports to a Lead Organizer, shall work under the direction of the Lead Organizer.  Keeps lead organizer regularly apprised of developments during organizing activities and tasks.

REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma and six months to three years experience in the union organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Knowledge of Union organizing practices and principles.

• Basic knowledge of labor law, especially with respect to union organizing.

• Knowledge of anti-union employer tactics.

• Leadership and motivational skills.

• Good oral and written communication skills.

• Fluent bilingual skills are desirable.


Work is performed in a variety of employment settings.  Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours are required.  Valid driver’s license required.

$3,000.00 per month plus a car and cell phone allowance
