AFSCME, Affiliates Win Media Awards

Jon Melegrito

Jon Melegrito, a writer for the International’s Public Employee magazine, is this year’s recipient of the International Labor Communications Association’s Max Steinbock Award for his report in the November/December 2005 issue on AFSCME members who survived the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. The award recognizes “an outstanding journalistic effort that explores an issue of concern to working families, with particular sensitivity and insight into the human spirit.” 
 AFSCME International and its affiliates won a number of other prestigious ILCA awards: 

General Excellence:

  • Magazines of more than 100,000 circulation: Public Employee, AFSCME International, second place.
  • Newspapers of less than 100,000 circulation:AFSCME Minnesota Public Employee, Council 5, first place.
  • Local unions of more than 20,000 circulation: Public Employee Quarterly, Ohio Civil Service Employees Association (OCSEA)/AFSCME Local 11, third place.
  • Regional organizations of more than 20,000 circulation: Public Employee Press, New York City DC 37, first place; Ohio Council 8 News, Council 8,third place.
