AFSCME to Honor Workers with 75 for 75 Awards
by Gregory King | March 28, 2012
For 75 years, AFSCME members have helped make America happen. Now, as we celebrate 75 years as a union, we want to celebrate some of the women and men who have made our union a leader and a champion for working families. The AFSCME 75 for 75 Award is designed to honor the best of our union, from 1936 to the present.
Help us identify 75 individuals who have made an important contribution to our union, our communities and our country. Whether it has been in organizing new members, electing worker-friendly candidates to office, fighting privatization, negotiating solid contracts, innovating in the workplace, advocating for legislation, helping during emergencies or fighting for our rights, we want to honor those who have made a real contribution to our history.
We plan to highlight the 75 honorees with a display at AFSCME’s 40th International Convention in Los Angeles this June. The honorees will be selected by a committee of AFSCME leaders who will review the nominations made by AFSCME members, councils and locals across the country.
We’re looking for the stories that make you proud – proud of a fellow member co-worker. We know that there are heroes among us, probably more than we can count, many or most of whom would never nominate themselves. For all of us in the public service, doing right by our community is just simply what we do. The point of this award is to lift up their stories. So please send in those nominations.
Nominations are now open on AFSCME’s 75th Anniversary website. They may also be mailed to Gregory King, AFSCME Communications, 1625 L Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20036. Deadline is April 15.
