Elevator mechanics, plumbers, sheet metal workers, grounds keepers and others responsible for maintaining the Library of Congress buildings and grounds are feeling more empowered these days. On Oct. 5, they voted overwhelmingly for union representation. The 84 workers – who are employed by the Architect of the Capitol – join other AOC laborers and custodial workers through Council 26’s Local 626.

“This is a landmark election,” says Local 626 Pres. Wally Reed. “The employees of AOC showed tremendous courage in stepping forward and asking for a voice in the workplace. The union looks forward to working with management to resolve issues affecting this group.”

Early this year, Council 26 brought to the attention of Congress health and safety issues affecting workers on Capitol Hill. At a hearing held in May, senators were outraged to learn that utility workers have been exposed to carcinogenic asbestos and falling concrete from dilapidated ceilings and walls for six years.

As a result of AFSCME’s advocacy and public pressure, the U.S. Senate appropriated $100 million to fix the problems. “Now that AOC workers have a union, they’ll have a stronger voice in advocating for their issues,” says Carl Goldman, Council 26 exec. director.
