GOP Gives Corporations “Get Out of Jail Free” Card
by Clyde Weiss | September 15, 2011
Republicans in Congress have consistently opposed the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for protecting workers’ rights. After the NLRB filed a complaint in April against aerospace giant Boeing for establishing a production line for its 787 Dreamliner in South Carolina – a move seen as retaliation against its unionized workers in Washington state – GOP lawmakers went after the NLRB.
Today, in the House, they voted overwhelmingly to pass a bill barring the NLRB from ordering a company to close, relocate or transfer employment – even if the company is found to be in violation of federal labor laws. AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee says the legislation, “gives companies a get out of jail free card and makes them less accountable for firing workers and shipping jobs overseas.” Read his entire statement here.
