Governor Kasich’s Crusade to Privatize Ohio’s Transportation Department

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gov. John Kasich continues his attack on public employees, with his efforts currently focused on privatizing sections of Ohio Transportation Department.
Twelve travel counselors were at risk of losing their jobs until Henry Vento, a Toledo travel counselor, was recognized and honored by Governor Kasich for his heroism in thwarting the kidnapping and human trafficking of two young girls at a travel information center. Plans to privatize these travel counseling jobs were put on hold as a direct result of Vento’s accolade, showing the importance of the work these employees do on a daily basis.
“Governor Kasich needs to understand the vital services that these hardworking employees give to Ohioans on a daily basis,” said ODOT Assembly Pres. Gary Apanasewicz. “These employees deserve to be commended for their efficiency and safety, instead of worrying about their jobs being on a chopping block.”
Other privatization efforts in Ohio, in addition to the travel information centers, include targeting parts services, rest area and highway maintenance, and heavy equipment training. ODOT has already privatized emergency roadside assistance and attempted to contract out its sign shop, but that ended when an analysis showed that public employees did the job more efficiently.
