In Memoriam, Joseph Peckham

by Gonzalo Baeza  |  May 17, 2011

Brother Joseph Peckham, 67, affectionately described as the “grand old man of labor” among his peers and coworkers at Rhode Island Council 94, passed away on May 2.

“On a rare occasion you come across a genuine leader of Joseph Peckham’s caliber - one who is selfless and dedicated to the betterment of others,” said International President Gerald W. McEntee. “Brother Joseph was a true leader who fought hard for workers’ rights, leading our Sisters and Brothers to countless victories. The labor movement has lost a truly inspiring force. He will be missed, but never forgotten.”

“The labor movement owes a debt of gratitude to Brother Joseph Peckham,” said International Secretary-Treasurer Lee A. Saunders. “As Council 94 mourns his passing, we stand with them in solidarity and the sadness can be felt nationwide – yet, we are encouraged and empowered by the life our Brother Joseph led. His example offers us hope for a better future and a model for a better day.”

For 32 years, Brother Peckham helped strengthen both AFSCME and the Rhode Island labor movement serving as the council’s business agent, acting executive director, and Deputy Executive Director, as well as organizing new members, negotiating contracts, handling grievances and working on state and local campaigns.

“The labor movement has lost a real champion and I have lost a great friend. Joe Peckham was the most honest, decent and hard working person I have ever met,” said Council 94 President J. Michael Downey. “He dedicated his life to the members of Council 94 and the labor movement with unparalleled passion and commitment.”

Peckham had stepped out of his position as the council’s deputy executive director in March. He leaves his wife, Susan and his sons Jeffrey and Mark.
