New Polls Show Voters Strongly Oppose GOP Anti-Worker Agendas

March 16, 2011

Two new surveys conducted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) show that the eight GOP state senators in Wisconsin who are subject to recall campaigns are extremely vulnerable and that Gov. John Kasich's approval rating in Ohio has plummeted in the wake of his attack on workers' rights.

  • In a survey of Wisconsin voters conducted for Daily Kos, PPP found that five of the eight GOP state senators for whom volunteers are circulating recall petitions poll under 50% in hypothetical matchups with Democratic challengers. Furthermore, three of the eight GOP incumbents actually trail a hypothetical challenger and support for a recall is above the 25% threshold in all eight districts. With petition signature gathering nearly 50% of the way toward its goal, it is quite possible that the Wisconsin Senate leadership that rammed through the bill eliminating workers' rights will not be leading the chamber by as soon as mid-summer.
  • A PPP survey of Ohio voters finds that a clear majority (54-31%) would vote to repeal SB 5 if a referendum on the legislation is held this fall. In yet another example of buyer's remorse, the survey also shows that former Gov. Ted Strickland would win a hypothetical "do-over" election against Gov. Kasich by 15 points (55-40%). Kasich's overreach may soon be the undoing of his anti-worker agenda and his future political aspirations.

A majority of voters appear to be joining our side in the movement to protect workers' rights from the corporate power grab. AFSCME members will be at the forefront of efforts to keep up the incredible energy we are seeing across the country straight into the election season of 2011 and 2012.
