Petition Urges City of Memphis to Act in Good Faith

Support Collective Bargaining

Outraged by the city council’s brazen violation of a contract that was already agreed upon with local unions in April, voters are demanding that the city of Memphis immediately rescind its decision to impose a 4.6 percent pay cut for all city workers. The contract called for no pay increases or pay cuts.

“The city asked us to take zero pay cuts, zero increases,” says Shelley Seeberg, administrator of AFSCME Local 1733 which represents more than 1,000 city workers. “Now less than two months later, we’re being told we’re going to lose 4.6 percent of our salary. Our contract is legal and binding and we have to hold our officials accountable for violating it.”

Earlier this month, AFSCME and several other local unions filed a class action grievance against the city.
