Postal Service Under Attack
April 11, 2012
The U.S. Senate is set to vote as early as this week on legislation that would do more harm than good under the guise of returning the United States Postal Service to fiscal solvency. Rather than provide a business plan to help the Postal Service deliver needed services to an evolving society, the legislation – S. 1789 – would force a radical downsizing of the USPS that would cost thousands of postal workers their jobs.
On Thursday, the National Association of Letter Carriers is holding “Save America’s Postal Service” demonstrations outside of Senate offices across the country to urge senators to vote NO on this bill.

While postal reform is needed, the devastating cuts in this legislation are not the right solution. If S. 1789 were to pass it would dismantle the Postal Service by:
- Putting an end to six-day mail delivery in two years.
- Phasing out door-to-door mail delivery.
Retirees who receive needed prescriptions by mail and small-business owners who use the mail to advertise are joining veterans groups, local elected officials, AFSCME and other union members, faith leaders and progressive allies to fight yet another effort to place the burden of our nation’s economic recovery squarely on the backs of working men and women.
