Romney: Betting on Bermuda
by Korey Hartwich | July 09, 2012
Mitt Romney says he believes in America, so why doesn’t he bank on it? According to a new article in Vanity Fair, Romney has been hiding money overseas.
Particularly jarring were the Romneys’ many offshore accounts. As Newt Gingrich put it during the primary season, “I don’t know of any American president who has had a Swiss bank account.” But Romney has, as well as other interests in such tax havens as Bermuda and the Cayman Islands.
The article describes how Romney has been hiding his money overseas so that he doesn’t have to pay taxes or comply with U.S. law. Romney’s campaign insists he’s not hiding anything, but the thing about offshore accounts is there is no way for voters to get the facts.
Former Ohio Governor Ted Strickland last week said:
“Oh, what a contrast, my friends, between these two men who would be president! President Obama is betting on America and American workers, and Mitt Romney is betting his resources in the Cayman Islands, in Bermuda, in Switzerland and God only knows where else he is putting his resources.”
So the next time Romney tries to say he believes in America, tell him to put his money where his mouth is.
