Romney Taps Medicare-Slashing Paul Ryan as VP Pick

by Cynthia McCabe  |  August 11, 2012

Paul RyanCongressman Paul Ryan, the architect of a budget plan raising taxes on the middle class to cut them for the rich, is Mitt Romney’s pick for the vice presidential spot on the GOP presidential ticket.

Mitt Romney calls Ryan’s budget plan ‘marvelous,’ even as it attacks working families, slashing benefits or ending Medicaid coverage for millions of Americans. Romney wants to convert Medicaid into a federal block grant administered by states. That will have devastating consequences for the economy.

Ryan also targets current and future retirees with his plans to gut Medicare as we know it, converting it to a voucher system. The plan weakens a crucial social safety net program that older Americans rely on.

President Obama said of the inequity of Ryan’s budget plan:

”When you go through this budget, the vision that it portrays is of an America where everybody is fending for themselves, a few are doing very well at the top, and everybody else is struggling to get by.”
