Douglas Moore Jr., executive director of United Domestic Workers Home Care Providers Union (UDW/AFSCME), was recently named 2008-2009 Labor Leader of the Year by the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council.
UDW/AFSCME members provide in-home care for low-income elderly and disabled citizens under the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program. Founded in 1979, the union now represents 65,000 home care workers throughout California.
Moore is also an AFSCME International vice president. Under his leadership, nearly 25,000 new members have joined UDW/AFSCME. He also helped members win the highest wages in the union’s history, and led the effort to win affordable health insurance and livable wages for the union’s members in San Diego County.
The San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council – which includes 124 affiliated labor groups – made particular note of Moore’s efforts to engage hundreds of diverse community leaders and groups to advance the goals of UDW/AFSCME. In a statement, the Labor Council said Moore “has created bridges to community partners for the entire labor movement, providing a conduit for organizing and political success.”
In accepting the award, Moore said the honor actually belongs to the UDW/AFSCME homecare providers and staff who are fighting for dignity and respect. Moore joined AFSCME in 1999 as a regional field administrator. In 2001 he was promoted to assistant director for AFSCME International’s Western Region and was elected an International vice president in 2008. Moore also served as Ohio state director for the national AFL-CIO.
