Warren Buffett Is Right: Tax the Rich

Are you a multi-millionaire? Chances are the answer is “no” — like most Americans you don’t have multiple vacation homes, you aren’t accustomed to traveling between them in your private jet, and you aren’t taking advantage of the extraordinary tax breaks for the wealthy put in place by Congress.
The truth is, the richer you are in the U.S., the lower your tax rate. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett, the third wealthiest person in the world, doesn’t think that’s fair. His simple message to Congress: Tax the super rich.
In an op-ed published in The New York Times, Buffett called on Congress to “stop coddling the super-rich” and make them pay their fair share. Here’s an excerpt:
Our leaders have asked for “shared sacrifice.” But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.
While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks…
My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.
