Remarks of Alberto Maguid, General Secretary, Argentine Civil Service Union and Vice President, Inter-Americas PSI

June 25, 2002

Sisters and brothers, affiliates, members of AFSCME of the U.S: I bring to you today the fraternal greetings of public sector unionists throughout Latin America. And I'd like to bring special greetings to the brothers and sisters of Puerto Rico who I have had the privilege of representing the Public Services International in Puerto Rico in their organizing activities.

And not only do I bring you fraternal greetings, I'd also like to bring you a message. I don't know how many of you all realize how important AFSCME is for the workers, the public sector workers of the rest of the world.

I don't know if you know how many brothers and sister trade unionists from around the world, public sector workers, are in debt to you, members of AFSCME. You might ask why are we in debt to you, to AFSCME. We are indebted to you because at every minute, AFSCME has been as active in solidarity with the people of the world who are suffering hunger and hardship.

And in a few words, in the course of this beautiful and important convention, I would only like to give you this important message: Don't abandon the world. The world needs your solidarity. AFSCME forward. Never turn back. Solidarity. Solidarity. Thank you.
