Education & Training

Our union is only as strong as our activist core. That is why the AFSCME Education and Leadership Training Department is dedicated to working with our affiliates to build our union's power by providing high quality training for AFSCME leaders. The department's training programs are built on a simple premise: Member involvement in union activities creates power in the workplace.

  The Labor Project for Working Families is giving away FREE hard copies of our training curriculum - Making It Work Better: A Work Family Educational Program. Training Success Stories

• 2007 National Labor College Grads
  Two of AFSCME’s 2007 National Labor College graduates, JoAnn Johntony and Davida Russell of AFSCME Local 4 in Ohio, are two union leaders who regularly participate in union training programs offered. At a result, both turned their union activism into college credits. Each received nearly one-half dozen NLC credits for attending accredited AFSCME and OPASE trainings which helped put these two women activists on the fast track to college diplomas.

  On June 23, 2007, five proud AFSCME members received a bachelor’s degree in labor studies from the NLC. AFSCME grads included: OPASE President Johntony, Council 4; Local 744 President Russell, Council 4; Karen Ann Lewis, Council 13, Local 972; Robert C Trombley, Council 18, Local 1461; and Sherman Travis Henry, Council 79, Local 1184

  Thanks to a AFSCME-NLC partnership, our members can receive academic credits for participating in qualified union training programs. Members may also transfer these college credits to their undergraduate degree programs at accredited colleges and universities across the country.
