AFSCME nurses are on the front lines of a health care system that is undergoing significant changes. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act means that more people will be eligible to receive health care services, preventive services will be in greater demand, and there will be a greater emphasis on the role of nurses across all health care settings.

At the same time, public budgets, which fund much of health care whether it is delivered by the public or private sector, are still in critical condition and some politicians are using this crisis as an excuse to try to literally destroy our union. Nurses aren’t taking it. Around the country AFSCME affiliates are organizing and building nurses’ power to defend quality health care and quality jobs. AFSCME nurses – alongside our other members – must continue to fight efforts to destroy the power of working men and women. AFSCME nurses need to be prepared to defend the rights and standards that are so critical for workers and patients.

The AFSCME/UNA 14th National Nurse Congress will feature speakers and workshops, and provide the opportunity for AFSCME nurse members to exchange ideas and celebrate some of our victories. While in Washington, AFSCME nurses will lobby Congress on the critical issues they face and will learn skills and tools to help address these issues back home.

Nurses can earn contact hours for attending the Congress.
