AFSCME Names New Director of Research & Collective Bargaining
Washington, DC —The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, has named Kerry J. Korpi as director of the union's Research and Collective Bargaining Department. Korpi succeeds former department director Don Wasserman, who recently was appointed as a member of the Federal Labor Relations Authority by President Clinton.
Korpi joined AFSCME International in 1982, as a labor economist. She went on to become a policy analyst for AFSCME in Madison, Wisconsin, before returning to Washington, D.C. as deputy director of the department she now heads.
"We are very pleased to name Kerry Korpi as director of AFSCME's Research and Collective Bargaining Department," said AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee. "For years, AFSCME has been at the forefront of predicting workplace trends, determining and serving the needs of our 1.3 million members. Ms. Korpi has been a vital part of that process, and we're confident she will continue to bring her wealth of experience to her new role."
"I'm pleased to be given this opportunity," Korpi said. "My years in AFSCME's International headquarters and in the field have given me a tremendous respect for the members, leaders and staff of this union. I am eager to work with them to confront the challenges ahead."
Before joining AFSCME in 1982, Korpi worked in various capacities with the National Consumer Cooperative Bank, with Cornell University, and with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. She holds a Masters Degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
AFSCME, with more than 1.3 million members, is the nation's largest public employee and health care workers union.
