AFSCME Selects HUD Official to Head Public Affairs Department

Washington, DC —

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the nation's largest public employee and health care workers union, today announced that it has selected Jean Nolan, assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to head its Public Affairs Department.

Nolan, who has served as HUD assistant secretary for public affairs since January 1993, will join AFSCME on April 1.

"We at AFSCME are very pleased that Jean Nolan will direct our public affairs efforts," said AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee. "Her expertise at HUD, in the non-profit sector, and as a journalist will be enormously beneficial to our organizing, legislative, and political campaigns."

Prior to serving at HUD, Nolan was the director of communications and director of publications at The Enterprise Foundation, a national organization founded and chaired by real estate developer James W. Rouse to provide affordable housing for low-income people. Prior to her work at The Enterprise Foundation, she was a staff reporter specializing in housing and business issues.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1981 from Temple University, Philadelphia.
