Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee in Reaction to the AMA Vote to Form a Union
WASHINGTON —“The American Medical Association’s (AMA) vote reflects a tidal wave of sentiment that doctors want representation, that they want a voice at the table, and that managed care has all too often tied their hands in terms of their ability to provide quality patient care.
“AFSCME has long recognized the value that unionization holds for physicians and their patients. We represent doctors from across the country who recognize that their profession is enhanced by the strong voice that union membership provides.
“Experienced, aggressive unions, like AFSCME, have proven effective in improving quality of care and for countering the profit-driven motives of Managed Care. And it is due to that effectiveness that we will continue to lead the way in organizing doctors from across the country. Physicians need the strongest advocate possible on their side -- and we’ve proven that we are.”
