Statement of President Gerald W. McEntee on AFSCME’s Investigation into Wrongdoing
WASHINGTON, DC —“I am proud of the efforts of this union to aggressively root out wrongdoing and of the procedures we have in place to ensure that our members’ dues are properly spent. I am also proud of our zero-tolerance policy toward wrongdoers. There may be a public relations price to pay for aggressively pursuing this policy, but our number one priority is protecting our members’ dues.
“Even a single incident of financial impropriety is deplorable. The overwhelming majority of AFSCME’s members and leaders are honest, hardworking individuals, and they fully support our efforts to preserve the integrity of their union.
“Our members can be assured that we will continue to go after anyone who misappropriates union funds, that we have cooperated with authorities in the past, and that we will continue to do so to seek full restitution within the law for anyone who takes money from union funds.
“AFSCME members hold their officers to the highest standards in the Labor movement. That wrongdoers have been identified and justice pursued is simply evidence of that.”
