Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee On the Withdrawal of Linda Chavez as Secretary of Labor

We are pleased that Linda Chavez made the prudent decision to withdraw her nomination as Secretary of Labor. Our opposition to Chavez was based on the issues. Chavez's record spoke for itself. She opposed the minimum wage, equal pay for women, affirmative action and a number of other issues of tremendous importance to working families.

President-elect George W. Bush has the right to assemble the team that he chooses. But we also have a right, indeed, the responsibility to examine their qualifications.

We are hopeful that President-elect Bush will announce a new nominee that will best serve the interest of America's working men and women.
