AFSCME Selects Former International Vice President to Head Union's Western Region

Washington, DC —

Gerald W. McEntee, President of the 1.3 million member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, announces the selection of former International Vice President Flo Walker to serve as its Western Regional Director.

"We are very pleased that Flo Walker will oversee our efforts in the western region," said AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee. "She has a long and successful history with AFSCME as an International Vice President, council president and organizer. Flo's institutional knowledge will be beneficial to us in winning justice and increased power for the newly organized and our 1.3 million members."

Walker served as president of Michigan AFSCME Council 25 for six years before retiring in 1998. She began her career at Michigan Bell Telephone Company and also worked for the city of Detroit where she organized the first clerical unit for AFSCME. In 1968 Walker was appointed the first female organizer for the union in Detroit.

"I am excited about the opportunity to work on behalf of those seeking a voice in the workplace," said Flo Walker. "AFSCME is the fastest growing union in the country and I feel privileged to be associated with this great union."

Walker will join AFSCME on January 1, 2003, heading the union's organizing and field service efforts in 17 states, including California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada.
