Western Kentucky Correctional Officers Come to Aid of One of Their Own

Colleagues Hold Yard Sale to Benefit Local Tornado Victim

PRINCETON, KY —

Officers and other employees at the Western Kentucky Correctional Complex in Eddyville are lending a hand this weekend to a fellow officer who lost his home in last Sunday's tornado.

Providence residents Casey Majors and his wife were hit hard by the tornado, as their home was destroyed and their lawn mower landed on top of their truck. But with no immediate assistance from their insurance company, correctional officers and employees — all members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO — are teaming up to gather donations and hold a yard sale in nearby Princeton today and Saturday to help tide them over.

"In AFSCME, everybody sticks together," explained fellow correctional officer Tim Beavers. "I know that they'd do the same thing if it were me."

An estimated 200 homes were destroyed or declared uninhabitable as a result of the twister that tore through the Providence area and other parts of western Kentucky. Governor Paul Patton has already declared emergencies in five counties.

So far the group's efforts have yielded more than $400 in sales and cash donations from colleagues, friends and neighbors. Those with additional items for sale or cash donations can contact Officer Tim Beavers at (270) 365-0130.
