AFSCME Names Irasema Garza Director of Women's Rights Department
WASHINGTON —The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO is pleased to announce the appointment of Irasema Garza as Director of its Women's Rights Department.
During the administration of President Clinton, Ms. Garza served as the director of the Women's Bureau in the United States Department of Labor from 1999 - 2001. Prior to her appointment at the Women's Bureau, she served as Secretary of the United States National Administrative Office.
Ms. Garza is a member of numerous Women's and Latino organizations, and was named by Hispanic Magazine as one of the nation's 100 most influential Hispanics in 1998. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with Distinction, from the University of Michigan in 1979; and her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1983.
"Throughout her career as an attorney and public servant, Ms. Garza has championed the interests of women, and been a strong advocate of increased access to education and employment opportunities for women. She will be a valuable resource for our members," said AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee.
AFSCME is the nation's largest public service employees and health care workers union with more than 1.3 million members.
