Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on Hibbs v. Dept. of Human Resources Before U.S. Supreme Court

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, continues to fight for improvements in workplace policies for working families nationwide. And as a leading advocate for passage of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 AFSCME fully supports former Nevada State employee William Hibbs in his fight before the U.S. Supreme Court to exercise his rights under the Act to bring FMLA violations to the courts.

The American workforce has changed over the last decade and now more than ever families are struggling to meet multiple responsibilities. The Family and Medical Leave Act allows working families the opportunity to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families and state employees should not be denied these rights.

The Family and Medical Leave Act signaled a new era in workplace policies and programs and must continue to benefit America's working families — free of discrimination
