Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee On Supreme Court Decision re: Family and Medical Leave Act

Today's ruling is a victory for millions of public service employees across this nation. For 10 years, 35 million other workers have been able to care for an ill relative or stay home with a new child under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

For these families, FMLA has provided the critical balance between obligations at work and responsibilities to family.

Public workers provide the services that keep this nation's states and cities moving forward. This victory means these hardworking men and women who care for our country will be able to take the time they need to care for their families.

AFSCME's 1.6 million members provide the vital services that make America happen. With members in hundreds of different occupations — from nurses to corrections officers, child care providers to sanitation workers — AFSCME advocates for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services and prosperity and opportunity for all working families.
