AFSCME Makes Donation to Aid Tsunami Victims

Statement by AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee

Washington, DC —

"The tsunami disaster resonates deeply among us at AFSCME, the leading labor union for public employees. In the same way that AFSCME supports the workers of America, we're reaching out to our fellow workers across the globe who've had their livelihoods and entire way of life taken from them by this devastating event. They are in most cases people with precious little margin for economic reversals of any kind, let alone of this magnitude. Yet they face immediate hardships that are unimaginable to us here in the safe and comfortable West.

"We hope our $10,000 donation to Doctors Without Borders will demonstrate our support during this recovery period," AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee said.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, is the nation's fastest growing public service employees union with 1.4 million members. AFSCME organizes for social and economic justice in the workplace and through political action and legislative advocacy. AFSCME represents a diverse group pf service and health care workers in the public and private sectors, including nurses, EMTs, bus drivers, child care workers, custodians and librarians.
