AFSCME Members Run to Help Working Families on June 24
Runners and Walkers meet in Fountain Valley to Raise Funds
Anaheim, CA —While weather forecasters are predicting another hot day for Anaheim, the scorching temperatures will not deter members of the nation’s fastest growing public service employees union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO. The ever-popular Biennial Fun Run supports the union’s legislative and political action committee, Public Employees Organized to Promote Legislative Equality (PEOPLE).
The young and the young-at-heart will participate in the three-mile race, set to begin promptly at 7:00 a.m., on Thursday, June 24, at Mile Square Regional Park at 16801 Euclid Street in Fountain Valley. Awards will be given to the first three female and male finishers; top three entrants raising the greatest contribution amount; the legislative district with the most participants and the youngest, oldest and last place participants.
PEOPLE empowers the union’s members and their families to become participants in the political process. PEOPLE provides funding for pro-working family candidates and political initiatives so that AFSCME members gain a stronger voice on issues that directly affect them.
More than 5,000 AFSCME members and guests are in California this week to participate in the Union’s 36th International Convention being held at the Anaheim Convention Center. Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry will address the convention at 3:30 p.m. on June 24. Under the auspices of the AFL-CIO, more than 30,000 members will join AFSCME’s largest convention ever to watch Senator Kerry’s address live via satellite and webcast. Union members in 18 cities in battleground states will hold events with special guests to hear directly from the Senator about his plans to take back America for working families.
AFSCME is the nation’s fastest growing public service employees union with 1.4 million members. AFSCME organizes for social and economic justice in the workplace and through legislative and political action. AFSCME represents a diverse group of service and health care workers in the public and private sectors including nurses, EMTs, bus drivers, child care workers, custodians and librarians.
