AFSCME Responds: Statement from President Gerald W. McEntee

In response to one of the worst disasters in our nation's history, AFSCME is providing extensive financial and human resources to assist the thousands of members and their families — as well as the many thousands of other individuals — affected by Hurricane Katrina.

AFSCME has more than 3,300 members in Louisiana, more than 800 of whom work in the hardest-hit city of New Orleans. These hard-working public service employees will soon be back at work, aiding their fellow citizens, often while coping with the personal losses they've suffered.

The International Union has already put $100,000 for Katrina relief into an established fund. You are urged to make your own donation to the AFSCME effort. Please write a check to the "AFSCME Fallen Heroes Fund" and send it to the fund care of 1625 L St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036-5687. On the memo line of the check or in a cover letter, specify that your contribution should be used for "Katrina Relief."

In addition to direct financial aid, the International Union and affiliates are deploying a team of union staff to provide support on the ground. This group will work out of AFSCME Council 17's office in Baton Rouge.

Along with AFSCME's fund, see the link below for a list of some of the many other organizations soliciting support for their relief efforts.
