Maryland Corrections Officers Host Lobby Day at State Capitol
COs Declare State of Emergency for Maryland's Prisons
BALTIMORE, MD —Baltimore, MD — In the wake of the recent death of a Maryland corrections officer, members of AFSCME Council 92 will hold a press conference to declare a "Corrections State of Emergency" prior to lobbying legislators.
With the increasing number of violent incidents involving inmates and officers, Council 92 will call on Governor Ehrlich to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of the community and Maryland’s corrections officers.
"Council 92 has been calling on the state to institute workplace safety procedures, increase security staff and provide adequate equipment for close to a decade," said Council 92 director Ron Bailey. "Governor Ehrlich needs to act now to secure our prisons. Because Maryland families just can't wait."
