“March for Justice” to Support Patient Care and Service Workers
AFSCME Convention Delegates to March on UCSF Medical Center Wednesday at 3:00 P.M.
On Wednesday, July 30, starting at 3:00 pm, more than 1,000 activists from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) will march in front of the University of California San Francisco Medical Center at 505 Parnassus in support of 20,000 University of California patient care and service workers represented by AFSCME Local 3299. The service workers just ended a five day strike and are negotiating for a fair contract and an end to poverty wages.
AFSCME is holding its International Convention this week in San Francisco. While the University of California is highly profitable, it has refused to negotiate a contract that provides equal pay for equal work. UC service workers now earn an average of 25 percent less than employees at comparable institutions in the state.
“Forty years ago, AFSCME sanitation workers marched in Memphis to be treated with respect on the job,” noted AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee. “Today, AFSCME is marching in San Francisco for workers being denied the same basic human dignity. The University should be ashamed of its treatment of its service workers. AFSCME members from across America are marching on Wednesday in support of our brothers and sisters. They deserve justice, and will fight with them until we win.”
