McEntee Says: “Governor’s Proposals Put Vital Services at Risk”

Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on Governor Schwarzenegger’s recent budget proposals.

San Francisco, CA —

AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee issued the following statement today on Governor Schwarzenegger’s recent budget proposals:

“Governor Schwarzenegger’s irresponsible budget proposals put the vital services Californians rely on at risk. Californians want government to protect their health and safety.

“The governor shouldn’t be slashing the pay of workers who make California’s government work. This is political posturing and not problem solving.  He helped create this crisis with stunts like eliminating $6 billion a year in vehicle registrations. Now, his proposals will make matters worse.

“For example, he is proposing spending caps that have already failed in states like Colorado, where spending caps nearly destroyed state and local services. This is not a time for proposals that have been proven not to work. It’s time for the governor to sit down with the legislature and resolve this crisis before the state’s services are disrupted and people are harmed.”
