Senate Republican Leaders Turn Their Backs on Working Americans

Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the Economic Recovery Act of 2008.

Washington, D.C. —

Gerald W. McEntee, International President of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO, issued the following statement following the Senate’s 52 to 42 vote on the Economic Recovery Act of 2008:

“Senate Republican leaders today blocked consideration of an economic stimulus bill aimed at boosting the collapsing economy, putting people to work and aiding states with much needed funding for their Medicaid programs.  While a majority of the Senate supported the bill, the Republicans required a supermajority of 60 votes to begin debate.  That’s outrageous.  While Republican leaders are eager to bailout the financial barons of Wall Street, they continue to turn their backs on working Americans who are struggling to hang onto their jobs, keep a roof over their heads and keep their health care coverage.”
