Secretary of Labor Solis: “A Ray of Hope”
Statement of AFSCME International President Gerald W. McEntee on the Confirmation by the Senate of Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis
“We at AFSCME salute the Senate confirmation of Hilda L. Solis as Secretary of Labor. It’s about time our elected leaders put their stamp of approval on Secretary Solis, acknowledging her as the right person to lead the Department of Labor through these difficult and daunting economic times. She offers working Americans a ray of hope in the midst of the struggle so many are facing from loss of jobs to loss of homes to loss of retirement security. After eight years of being left behind in an economy rigged to favor the privileged, working men and women now have a Secretary of Labor who will fight for them and with them. Throughout her career in public service, Secretary Solis has been a champion for America’s working men and women. She knows from her own family’s history that unions are a ticket to the middle class, raising the standard of living for all. We look forward to working with Secretary Solis to ensure workers’ rights, safety and security as together we build an economy that works for everyone.”
