AFSCME: Helping States Now Will Reduce DeficitsWashington, DC —
AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee issued the following statement regarding a new study, The Fiscal Survey of States, released today by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO). The report indicates that states are facing the most difficult fiscal crisis since the Great Depression.
“This report makes a compelling case that state and local governments need help to protect a million jobs in this difficult economy. If those jobs are lost, you can kiss goodbye any real hope for significant economic recovery and deficit reduction. The Senate can provide the help state and local governments need by restoring a six-month extension of federal funds to state Medicaid programs. This short-term boost to states will help block job-killing budget cuts. Helping states now is a smart investment for the economy and will reduce deficits over the long run.”
