AFSCME Praises Reid and Pelosi for Action on Jobs Bill
Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the U.S. Senate’s final passage of the Jobs BillWashington, DC —
“Thanks to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), the Democratic majority in the Senate and two courageous Republicans, communities across this country have been thrown a lifeline to help them meet the staggering challenges created by the Bush Recession. AFSCME is proud that our members worked so hard to secure this emergency funding to help states deal with their unprecedented budget shortfalls, while saving jobs and protecting vital public services.
“We are grateful that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has called the House back into session to get this legislation to President Obama as soon as possible. Her actions, and Harry Reid’s persistence, demonstrated once again that Democrats are working to save jobs and bring our economy back from the dead. With rare exceptions, the Republican leadership in Washington continues to turn their backs on America’s working families. All they seem to care about are tax-breaks for the wealthy and a return to the failed policies of George W. Bush. Our members and all Americans will remember their reprehensible record in November.”
