Coming Soon to a Downtown Near You: AFSCME Premieres “The Choice” in 10 Cities Across the Country

Main Street Film Festival lays out what’s at stake this November

Washington, DC —

This week, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME) is launching the Main Street Film Festival, a multi-city campaign designed to lay out what’s at stake this November. AFSCME will debut a new video, titled “The Choice,” which will be projected onto the sides of buildings in 10 downtown areas in key congressional battleground districts.

“The Choice,” which features the tagline “History only repeats itself if you let it,” will highlight the consequences of returning Republicans to power: more favors for Wall Street, more Bush-style tax cuts for the rich and more attempts to privatize Social Security. View a promotional poster for the video here. View the video itself here.

“America’s working families need to know that they have a choice this November: tax breaks for wealthy CEOs and perks for Big Oil; or more jobs, a secure retirement and government accountability for the rest of us,” said AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee. “Why put these foxes back in charge of the henhouse? As the film says, ‘History only repeats itself if you let it.’ And we know how this story ends.”

The Main Street Film Festival activities come after a series of recent reminders of the choice facing America in November. In July, Democrats passed a Wall Street reform bill, despite near-unanimous Republican opposition. In August, Democrats passed a bill to save the jobs of hundreds of thousands of teachers, police and firefighters – a move that 60 percent of Americans supported – despite, again, near-unanimous Republicans opposition. And recently, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) released a “budget blueprint” that would privatize Social Security. Ryan would become the Budget Committee chair if Republicans gain power in the November elections.
