Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the Senate Passage of Aid for the UnemployedWashington, DC —
"For more than three months, millions of unemployed Americans have been held hostage by Republican senators who refused to provide an extension of unemployment benefits. Today, Senate Democrats succeeded in breaking the GOP filibuster. While this is good news, Republicans continue to block emergency aid for state and local governments, funding that the majority of U.S. governors have specifically requested, and almost half have factored into their state budgets. Without this funding, nearly a million more jobs will be lost in the private and public sectors. The House and Senate have done a good job for families hit hard by unemployment, but more needs to be done to get our economy back on track. It's time to tell the Republicans in Washington to stop playing political games and end their obstruction. It's time to pass the jobs bill."
