AFSCME Salutes Our Nation’s Law Enforcement Officers Who Serve Our Country with Valor and Distinction

Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on National Law Enforcement Officers Week

Washington, DC —

“Every day some 900,000 law enforcement officers across this country put their lives on the line so that each of us can safely walk the streets of our communities. They serve with honor and distinction, both at home and abroad in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan.

“These dedicated men and women hold true to their oath to ‘act with honesty, courtesy and regard for the welfare of others.’ During National Law Enforcement Officers Week, established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who continue to serve on the frontlines.

“This year, we are especially humbled by the induction of one of our own, Officer Robert Vincent Fumiatti, of the New Haven Police Department, a member of AFSCME Council 15/Local 530. Officer Fumiatti’s name will be added to the wall of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

“As we observe National Law Enforcement Officers Week, I would like to remind our political leaders of the importance of having these officers on the streets of our neighborhoods, rather than in the unemployment lines.

“AFSCME represents over 100,000 public safety personnel and is committed to servicing law enforcement officers around the country. We are proud of the difficult work they do, often under dangerous conditions, walking their beats and patrolling our communities. Their sacrifices will never go unnoticed.”
