AFSCME Statement on Proposals that Attack Federal Employee Income and Retirement BenefitsWashington, DC —
“Middle class federal employees, who already have been hit by a two-year pay freeze, are now asked to take a 5 percent pay cut to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy, along with other changes that could substantially reduce their income. This is not the way to solve our budget problems.
“The House Budget Resolution would freeze federal employee pay for five years, cut the workforce by 10 percent and require federal employees to significantly increase their retirement contributions. Federal employees didn’t cause our economic problems. They are hard-working professionals who should not be scapegoated by politicians who don’t have the courage to stand up to the CEOs and the Wall Street banks who have not been asked to make any sacrifice during these difficult economic times.
“At a time when major corporations pay little to no taxes and the very wealthy continue to benefit from massive tax breaks that have put unneeded pressure on the federal budget, it is time for Washington leaders to look for real solutions to our problems. Continuing to ask the middle class to pay for the greed and irresponsibility of wealthy CEOs and the politicians who work for them is not the answer.”
