GOP Senators Side with Insurance Industry, Not Working Americans
Statement of AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee on the Senate’s vote on Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act
Washington, DC —“Today, every Republican in the U.S. Senate voted to repeal President Obama’s historic Affordable Care Act. Instead of working to create jobs, these GOP senators voted to eliminate health care reforms that benefit seniors, young people and the middle class.
“Senators have access to the type of comprehensive coverage that this law makes available to all Americans. Senators cannot be denied coverage if they have a pre-existing condition. They cannot lose their insurance when they get sick. And women in the Senate cannot be forced to pay higher premiums just because of their gender. Yet, Republicans voted to deny these protections to the rest of the country.
“Their efforts to destroy health care reform put the Senate Republicans on the side of the insurance industry. Thankfully, Democrats in the Senate stood with working families who are beginning to experience the real benefits of health reform.”
