RI Council 94, AFSCME Mourns the Loss of Joseph R. Peckham

North Providence, RI —

RI Council 94 mourns the loss of former longtime employee and dedicated trade unionist Joseph Peckham. Scott McKay said it best when he described Brother Peckham as the “grand old man of labor,” known for his negotiating skills, but remembered for his respect for our members.

“The labor movement has lost a real champion and I have lost a great friend. Joe Peckham was the most honest, decent and hard working person I have ever met. He dedicated his life to the members of Council 94 and the labor movement with unparalleled passion and commitment,” said Council 94 President J. Michael Downey.

Peckham worked for Council 94 as Business Agent, Acting Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director over his 32-year career. During that time he was active in all aspects of the Union including organizing new members, negotiating contracts, handling grievances, political action, working on state and local political campaigns and working with community groups and labor organizations.
