AFSCME’s McEntee: “Daniels Wants a Return to the Spoils System”

Statement of AFSCME Pres. Gerald W. McEntee regarding Gov. Mitch Daniels’ remarks on Fox News Sunday about public sector unions

Washington, DC —

“Mitch Daniels says ‘government works better without unions.’ Do we need any more proof that Daniels and other anti-union governors want to return to the days of the spoils system, where elected officials could fire workers whenever they wanted to? Daniels wants to silence the voice of workers and eliminate their ability to negotiate at the bargaining table for safer workplaces, better working conditions and respect on the job. And he doesn’t like the fact that unions have stood in the way as he tries to turn over public services in Indiana to his Wall Street buddies so they can get rich on the taxpayers’ dime.

“Daniels should stop bashing unions and blaming workers for the damage he and his cronies have done to our economy. We need to pull together for the sake of all workers instead of scapegoating public employees.”
